Cost-Effectiveness Analysis

Find the lowest cost way to achieve your organization’s aims

Many organizations and government departments have a singular dedicated mission such as eliminating poverty, maximizing health or addressing climate change. Identifying the lowest cost way to reach the outcomes you care about is an important tool towards increasing impact.

For example, Mettalytics worked with six Indian eye care providers to determine how much it cost to identify and diagnose an individual with eye disease and encourage them to take corrective action. In this study, we compared five different interventions, identifying that primary health care facilities and eye camps were the cheapest way to meet the providers’ goal of reducing eye disease. The paper is currently under peer review.

Cost-effectiveness analysis can help you with:

  • Setting programming to make your funds go further: Cost-effectiveness analysis helps you determine which current and potential programs reach your organization’s goals most cost-effectively. Prioritizing the more cost-effective options allows you to do even more good with the resources at your disposal, and may increase your impact by 100-fold!

  • Providing donors with compelling evidence of value-for-money: Donors are becoming ever more conscious about value-for-money. Conducting a cost-effectiveness analysis shows donors that you’ve carefully considered the options available, and plan to be efficient with funds.

Cost-effectiveness analysis can also be incorporated with social return on investment / cost-benefit analysis.
